Update on the Condition of Curtis Williams

Seattle - Washington senior defensive back Curtis Williams was admitted to Stanford University Hospital on Saturday, Oct. 28 following an injury he sustained during the Huskies' football game against Stanford. Williams was injured with 2:01 remaining in the third quarter when he attempted to make a tackle on Stanford running back Kerry Carter. A television replayed showed that the two players' helmets contacted during the play.

Upon his admission to Stanford University Hospital a CAT scan was performed that indicated Williams did not suffer a spinal fracture or broken bone. An MRI that followed. revealed evidence of a spinal cord injury. Details of the exact nature of the injury are not yet available. According to Dave Burton, Associate Athletic Director of Sports Medicine, Wellness and Student Services, it may be several days, or a longer period of time, before specifics are known regarding Williams' injury.

Williams was sedated while undergoing medical examination on Saturday evening. He was later conscious and responded non-verbally to physicians. He currently remains in intensive care and will continue to undergo testing regarding his injury.

Any updates on Williams condition will be provided by the University through the local media.

Williams was credited with nine tackles during Washington's 31-28 victory against Stanford. The 22-year-old senior from Fresno, Calif. (Bullard High School) has earned two letters at Washington. He has started every game the past two seasons as a safety and is currently third on the team with 55 tackles.

The University of Washington asks that individuals not attempt to contact the Stanford University hospital regarding Mr. Williams' condition. The Stanford University hospital will not release information regarding Mr. Williams.
