UW Men Storm Back to Finish Third at the Nelson

STANFORD, CA - Led by a pair of one-under 70s by Brock Mackenzie and Conner Robbins, the Washington men's golf team carded a final round one-under 283 to finish in a tie for third place at the Nelson Invitational. The Huskies' score of 283 was the best of any team in the final round and placed them in a tie with Alabama with a three-day score of 869. Duke, which led the tournament from start to finish, finished with 862, four shots ahead of second-place North Carolina State.
Washington junior Gordy Scutt fired a one-over 72 and freshman Corey Prugh shot even-par for the final round as they finished tied for 13th with scores of three-over 216. Mackenzie and Robbins moved up to 20th place with their 70s, each carding a six-over 219 for the weekend. Steve Sokol of Florida Southern, who trailed Duke's Leif Olson by five shots after 36 holes, fired a seven-under 64 to overtake Olson and win the individual title. Sokol finished at five-under 208 while Olson finished three shots back with a two-under 311.
Washington will compete in their final tournament of the fall season, The Prestige at Palm Desert on Nov. 6-7 in Palm Desert, Calif.
