Ferguson Leads Women's Golf At NMSU Tournament

Oct. 30, 2000

LAS CRUCES, New Mexico - - Stacie Ferguson shot a second round 74 as the Oregon State women's golf team finished the first two rounds of the New Mexico State Intercollegiate in 13th place with a 627. The 18-team field will finish the tournament with 18 holes on Tuesday at the par 72, 6,117-yard New Mexico State University Golf Course.

Ferguson, whose 74 was a season-low, dropped in an eagle when she holed out a nine-iron on her third-to-last hole. The sophomore shot a 78 in the first round and heads into the final round tied for 25th with a 152.

OSU shot 310 and 317 for a total of 627 while the squad struggled to make putts and take advantage of consistent driving.

'I wouldn't say this is one of our better efforts,' head coach Rise Lakowske said. 'I think they're better than that, they're just not adjusting to the speed of the greens. We're in the same place we've been the whole fall, we'll try to get better over the winter and of course do better tomorrow.'

Turning in another solid performance was Melanie Furuta. The redshirt freshman contributed a 75-78 and stands tied for 31st with a 153.

Carina Olsson and Marylyn Brand each carded a 161, Olsson's came via a 79-82, and Brand shot 78-83. Laura Skinner shot 167.

'There were a couple of highlights,' Lakowske said. 'Melanie played pretty well in the morning and Stacie played well and had a good attitude.'

In the team competition, Texas Christian leads second-place host New Mexico State by five strokes with a 581. Third-place Oklahoma State is 16 shots behind TCU at 597.

TCU's Courtney Wood leads the drive for medalist honors with a 69-72--141, good for a three-shot lead over Oklahoma State's Maria Boden, NMSU's Sasha Medina, and Melanie Hagewood who shot 144 on the day.
