Women's Volleyball Defeats St. Mary's College 3-0

Cardinal outside hitter Tara Conrad tallied 11 kills while hitting .526 as No. 17 Stanford defeated St. Mary's 3-0 tonight in Maples Pavilion. Games scores were 15-9, 15-9, 15-11.
The Cardinal improve to 13-9 overall while the Gaels fall to 9-12 overall.
Game one saw St. Mary's jump out to the early 5-0 lead but Stanford answered with four points of their own to pull within one. With the Cardinal down 4-6, kills by Ashley Ivy and Jennifer Detmer tied the game up at 6-6. Stanford went ahead on a Gael hitting error. But St. Mary's rallied, scoring three straight points to take the 9-7 lead. Stanford then proceeded to shut the Gaels down, scoring eight consecutive points to close out game one, 15-9. The Cardinal hit .386 for the game.
St. Mary's once again took the early 4-1 lead, however Stanford answered with six straight points to take the 7-4 lead. The Gaels fought back to tie the game at 7-7and take the 8-7 lead on a kill by Whitney Hoover. Stanford tied the game on a service ace by Emily Lawrence and regained the lead on a kill by Sara McGee. St. Mary's stayed close pulling to within one at 9-10 but Stanford ripped off five consecutive points to end the game 15-9.
Game three began with the Cardinal building 6-2 and a 11-5 leads on the Gaels. St. Mary's would not go quietly, scoring five points to pull within one at 10-11. Stanford would reach match point on a kill by Emily Lawrence. The Gaels would hold off four match points but in the end a kill by Tara Conrad would give Stanford the 15-11 victory.
The Cardinal hit .333 for the match and out blocked the Gaels 10-5. St. Mary's hit .149 for the match.
For the Gaels, Heather Dill notched 11 kills, followed by Rachelle Von's 10 kills. Von also had 12 digs on the evening. Setter Whitney Hoover added 33 assists and 12 digs.
Stanford travel to the Washington schools for matches this Thursday and Friday.
