Oct. 31, 2000
BERKELEY, CA - ITA Regional Championships
With the quarterfinal matches complete, two Cal players were left standing in the ITA Regional Championships. Sophomore John Paul Fruttero and senior Adrian Barnes advanced today to the semifinal round of the four-day tournament. The two would have to play each other, however, for a shot at the championship.
Adrian Barnes advanced to the semifinal round by defeating Nick Fustar of Fresno State 6-3, 6-2. The match was originally scheduled for the Hellman Tennis Courts, however, competition was moved to the Channin Tennis Facility due to lingering puddles from the weekend's rainy weather. Three weeks ago, Barnes advanced to the quarterfinals of the Fresno State Bulldog Classic before retiring to Ari Strasberg of Washington.
Sophomore John Paul Fruttero reached the semifinals by knocking off (#5) Scotty Scott of Stanford 6-3, 6-3 in the quarterfinals held this morning at the Channing Tennis Facility. At the ITA All-American Championships, Fruttero appeared in the semifinals before losing to the eventual champion, Genius Chidzikwe of Southern Methodist University.
The final four of the tournament is made up of two players from Cal and two from Stanford. (#1) K.J. Hippensteel of Stanford knocked off teammate Scott Lipsky (6-2, 6-2) to advance to the semifinal round and will face teammate (#7) Ali Ansari for a chance at Fruttero or Barnes. The inevitable Cal/Stanford matchup will take place tomorrow morning at the Hellman Tennis Courts in Berkeley, start time pending.
No. 2 seeded Fruttero will match up against the No. 13 seeded Barnes in the semifinal match held today at the Hellman Tennis Courts at 2:30 p.m.
