Barnes Falls In Championship

BERKELEY, CA - ITA Regional Championship
No. 13 seed Adrian Barnes of Cal went head to head against the No. 1 seed K.J. Hippensteel of Stanford this morning at the Hellman Tennis Courts for the ITA Regional Championship. After both winning their previous five matches to advance to the championship, the Cal/Stanford rivalry took center stage.
After alternating wins during the first four games, Hippensteel grabbed the advantage in the fifth game with the help of two service faults on behalf of Barnes. Barnes battled back in the sixth and seventh games, taking a 4-3 advantage. With the help of his relentless serve, Hippensteel put Barnes on his heels as he took the last three games of the set, winning 6-4.
Serving the first game of the second set, Barnes got in trouble again with a service fault, giving the advantage to Hippensteel who capitalized on the frustrated Barnes. Hippensteel took the first four games of the set before Barnes grabbed a win. Hippensteel, who may have relaxed with a 4-0 advantage, made two unforced errors in the fifth game, while Barnes put on the finishing touch with a service ace.
Barnes, however, could not manage to get in a rhythm as Hippensteel took the next two games, sealing his victory and the championship, 6-4, 6-1. The victory for Hippensteel gives him an automatic bid to the Rolex National Indoor Championships in February.
Barnes has another shot at a championship as he plays in the ITA Regional Championship match in doubles with fellow senior Scott Kintz today. The No. 1 seeded tandem will face the No. 3 duo of Scott Lipsky and David Martin from Stanford. The rivalry continues with Cal and Stanford going head to head for the doubles championship today at the Hellman Tennis Courts at 1:30 p.m. The winner will receive a bid to the Rolex National Indoor Championships in doubles.
