Barnes/Kintz Fall In ITA Doubles Championship
Nov. 1, 2000
BERKELEY, CA - ITA Regional Doubles Championship
No. 1 seeded Adrian Barnes and Scott Kintz from Cal battled Stanford's Scott Lipsky and David Martin for the ITA Regional doubles championship today at the Hellman Tennis Courts. The matchup between Cal and Stanford was the second of the day. Earlier No. 13 seed Adrian Barnes lost to No. 1 seed K.J. Hippensteel of Stanford in the ITA singles championship.
The No. 1 doubles team for the Bears couldn't get passed the Cardinal team, falling 8-4 in the championship. The two seniors from Cal had more than enough experience against the sophomore pair from Stanford. However, Barnes and Kintz never got into a rhythm, coming up short on numerous service returns. Barnes, who came off a defeat an hour earlier in the singles championship, tried to come out of the tournament with a victory, yet the Cambridge, England native fell short, losing to Stanford in both singles and in doubles.
The duo from Cal had advanced to the finals of the tournament with four straight wins including victories over Fresno State's Fustar/Mullins 9-7 in the semifinals, Stanford's Ansari/Scott 8-4 in the quarterfinals, UOP's Abrahamsson/Lindholm 8-5, and Washington's Lunde/Weiss 8-0.
The Cal men's team takes a break from Fall competition as they prepare for the Spring opener, the Collegiate Invitational, Jan. 13-15 at Sherman Oaks, Ca.
