K.J. Hippensteel Advances To Finals Of ITA Regional Championships

BERKELEY, Calif. - Stanford junior K.J. Hippensteel (Roanoke, VA/International Academy) defeated teammates Scott Lipsky (Merrick, NY/Bellmore-Kennedy HS) and Ali Ansari (Houston, TX/Second Baptist HS) in straight sets to advance to the finals of the ITA Regional Championships/ITA Indoor Qualifier at the University of California-Berkeley.
The top-seeded and fifth-ranked Hippensteel posted a 6-2, 6-2 win over Lipsky in an all-Cardinal quarterfinal, while seventh-seeded and 96th-ranked Ansari posted an impressive three-set upset win over third-seeded Matt Hanlin of Washington 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
In the all-Stanford semifinal, Hippensteel eliminated Ansari 6-3, 6-3. The match marked the first appearance in a tournament semifinal in Ansari's career, while Hippensteel moved one step closer to his third career tournament singles title and second at the ITA Regional Championships (1998). In the championship match, Hippensteel will face 13th-seeded Adrian Barnes of California on Wednesday morning in Berkeley.
The tournament was originally scheduled to conclude on Tuesday, but is running one day behind schedule because of rainy weather in the Bay Area last weekend.
