Men's Tennis Sweeps ITA Regional Championships For Fourth Consecutive Year
Nov. 1, 2000
BERKELEY, Calif. - For the fourth straight year, the Stanford men's tennis team has swept the singles and doubles titles at the ITA Regional Championships.
Junior K.J. Hippensteel (Roanoke, VA/International Academy) claimed his second singles title in this event by defeating Adrian Barnes of California 6-4, 6-1 on Wednesday at the University of California-Berkeley. The Cardinal made it a clean sweep later in the day when sophomore David Martin (Key Biscayne, FL/Boca Raton Prep) repeated as doubles champ in this event by teaming with sophomore Scott Lipsky (Merrick, NY/Bellmore-Kennedy HS) to defeat California's Barnes and Scott Kintz 8-4 in the finals.
Last year in Seattle, the Cardinal's Alex Kim (Potomac, MD/Winston Churchill HS) won the singles crown and Hippensteel and Martin captured the doubles. Hippensteel also won the singles title in 1998 and teamed with Ryan Wolters to win the doubles title that same year, while the Cardinal's Mike Bryan won the 1997 singles crown and teamed with twin brother Bob to win the doubles championship. This year's tournament featured entrants from Stanford, California, Washington, Gonzaga, Oregon, Nevada, Pacific, Sacramento State, San Francisco, Santa Clara, Saint Mary's and Fresno State.
The top-ranked and fifth-seeded Hippensteel dominated the field en route to his third career tournament singles title. Hippensteel lost a combined total of just 25 games in his six victories, including the straight set win over the 13th-seeded Barnes in the finals. Hippensteel trailed 4-3 in the opening set, but then won the next seven games to take control.Third-seeded Lipsky and Martin earned an automatic bid in February's ITA Indoor Championships in Dallas with the upset win over the top-seeded duo from California. The doubles victory is the second of Martin's career, and the first for Lipsky.
This was Stanford's final tournament of the fall season. Stanford's final competition of the 2000 calendar year is a dual at Hawaii on Friday, November 24th at 3:00 p.m. (PT).
