Cougars Counting on Third Round Surge in Long Beach
Nov. 2, 2000
Long Beach, Calif. --- Washington State has gotten used to digging themselves out of holes this fall. The Cougars will break out the shovel again on Tuesday at the 49er Collegiate Classic, and try to salvage a forgettable 36 holes on Monday.
WSU is 12th overall in the 15-team field. Arizona leads San Diego by two strokes at the top of the leader board. The Cougars carded a first round 300, and followed that up with a 301 in the afternoon. Those were the second and third worst rounds of the year for Washington State.
Junior Jon Reehoorn is the only Cougar in the top 25. Reehoorn began his day with a first round 71. The Burlington, Wash., native was fifth going into the second round, where he shot a 77 and finished the day tied for 25th at six-over-par.
Jeremy Taylor continued his consistent fall season with a 76 and a 74, giving him an eight-over-par 150 heading into Tuesday. The junior team captain is tied for 35th. Roger Flynn is the only other Cougar in the top 50. Flynn carded a 10-over-par 152 and is tied for 43rd.
The Air Force Academy's Ben Leestma is the individual leader going into the final 18 holes on Tuesday. Leestma fired a two-under-par 140 and holds a one-shot advantage over John Mallinger of Long Beach St., and Troy McKinley of Pacific.
A third round comeback is not out of the question for Washington State. The Cougars jumped four places on the leader board in the final rounds of the Husky Invitational and the Northwest Collegiate Classic earlier this fall.
Play begins at 8 a.m. on Tuesday.
