Nov. 2, 2000
TEMPE, Ariz. -- Behind strong defense and 16 kills from senior outside hitter Amanda Burbridge, the Arizona State Sun Devil volleyball team defeated the Oregon Ducks 3-0 in Pac-10 volleyball action Thursday evening at Wells Fargo Arena.
The 15-8, 15-4, 15-7 victory gave ASU head coach Patti Snyder-Park her 100th career Pac-10 win, marking only the fourth time in Pac-10 history a coach has reached that milestone. ASU improved to 16-8 overall and sit in fourth place in the Pac-10 at 8-6. Oregon fell to 9-13, 1-12 in conference action.
'To get the 100 wins is a nice achievement, but getting 101 tomorrow night against Oregon State will be even sweeter,' Snyder-Park said after the match. 'We played great defense and just took control of the match from the beginning. If we can pick up a win tomorrow night it puts us in good position for the NCAA tournament.'
Burbridge (Scottsdale) maintained her streak of recording at least double-digit kills in each of of her 22 matches this year. The senior now has 1,476 career kills, now just 24 short of becoming the 26th player in Pac-10 history to pass the 1,500 kill mark.
Junior outside hitter Jami Coughlin (Glendale) tallied 12 kills and added a team-high 12 digs. Senior middle blocker Michelle Mortensen (Chandler) added 11 kills and hit .364 for the match. Freshman setter Cheryl Anglin (Queen Creek) led all players with 42 assists and now has 1,182 in her rookie campaign to rank seventh in single-season school history with four matches remaining.
The Sun Devils fell behind 4-0 in the first game before battling back to go on a 12-0 run and won the opening set 15-8. ASU took a convincing 15-4 in game two and put the match away 15-7 in game three.
The Sun Devils will battle the Oregon State Beavers Friday evening at 7 p.m. at Wells Fargo Arena. The match with the Beavers is the 2000 home finale and will be the last match for the four ASU seniors on the roster (Burbridge, Mortensen, Becky Sidoti, Ashley Hubbard).
