Nov. 2, 2000
Corvallis, Ore. - SCHEDULE: The Oregon State University men's basketball team opens its exhibition season Mon., Nov. 6 against Start Bratislava of Slovakia. Game time from Ralph Miller Court in Gill Coliseum is 7:05 p.m.
STARTING LINEUP: Head Coach Ritchie Mckay has not determined his starting lineup as of Thursday, Nov. 2, and doesn't expect to make a decision until game day.
ABOUT START BRATISLAVA: Start Bratislava is a member of the 11-team Slovak Basketball Association. The team is from the country's capital city of Bratislava (pop. 441,500), which is located in the western edge of the country near the Austrian border. Forward Alexander Polovjanov is the team's leading scorer and is fourth in the league at 17.8 points per game, and center Tomas Dolinsky averages 17.5. This is the team's first contest of a six-game schedule, which includes stops at Warner Pacific, Whitworth, Nevada, Wyoming, and Washington State.
McKAY ON THE GAME: 'I want to see this team play good sound defense and play unselfishly offensively, but I'm really curious about how much we have learned in practice since we began the middle of last month. I always say I don't care about exhibition games, but when the contest starts I want to win.'
b>WHO'S LEFT: It might be easier to list the players who are available for the Nov. 6 game, than describe who is not. Here is the latest report:
Player Injury Time FramePhilip Ricci arthro. knee surgery 2000-2001 RedshirtEmonte Jernigan broken bone LT foot mid-December returnDerek Potter broken bone LT foot mid-December return Jimmie Haywood right ankle sprain probable for game
McKAY ON THE INJURIES: 'My biggest concern is our lack of depth due to injuries, we absolutely can't afford another injury. I'm not affraid of injuries, but the setbacks we have incurred, have forced me to see what other guys are capable of in different settings. Chris Manker, for example, is going to see a lot of minutes in these exhibition games, because I need him to adapt to playing at this level.'
WALK-ON ADDED: Jared Abell of Prineville, Ore., has been added to the roster as a walk-on. The 6'5' freshman forward played at Crook County High School where he averaged 23.1 points as a senior. He was a two-time All-Intermountain Conference selection, and was the league's Co-Player of the Year last season.
LETTER OF INTENT DAY APPROACHING: The early men's basketball letter of intent day is Nov. 8-15.
