Nov. 3, 2000
SEATTLE - Unable to capitalize on a number of early leads, the Washington Huskies fell, 16-14, 16-14, 15-7, to the visiting California Golden Bears Friday in Pac-10 volleyball action at the Hec Edmundson Pavilion Addition. With the loss, the UW fell to 6-16 overall and 1-13 in the Pac-10, while Cal, which snapped a five-match losing streak, improved to 10-12 overall and 5-10 in conference play.
Despite the loss, the Huskies received solid performances from quick hitter Allison Richardson (Hemet, Calif), who led the team with 18 kills, and setter junior Britni Churnside (Eugene, Ore.), who turned in her fifth straight double-double with 44 assists and 15 digs. Sophomore Gretchen Maurer (San Clemente, Calif.) also added 11 digs, while junior quick hitter Lisa Underhill (Vista, Calif.) tallied 15 kills.
Washington had big early leads in each of the first two games, recording their first of three game points at 14-6 in game one. Cal, however, behind the solid play of Alicia Perry (18 kills, 13 digs), found away to score 10 unanswered points to snatch away a 16-14 game-one victory.
The Huskies raced out early once again in game two, taking a seven-point lead at 11-4 on a kill from Richardson. The Bears closed the gap quickly, tying the score at 12-12,13-13 and 14-14. A pair of Husky hitting errors then put California up two games to none with another 16-14 victory.
The third game remained the same story, as the Huskies were up early 7-4 before California scored 11 unanswered points to claim the match with a 15-7 win.
The Huskies head back out on the road for two more Pac-10 matches next week against Oregon (Thursday) and Oregon State (Friday) at 7 p.m. The match versus Oregon State will be broadcast on a tape-delay basis on Fox Sports Northwest.
