Volleyball Drops Four-Game Match At Arizona State

Nov. 3, 2000

TEMPE, Ariz. - Gina Schmidt posted match-highs of 19 kills and 14 digs but it wasn't enough for the Oregon State volleyball team to overtake Arizona State on Friday evening. The Sun Devils defeated the Beavers in four games (15-12, 15-7, 10-15, 15-8).

'We played scared and waited for ASU to not do things well instead of taking care of what we needed to take care of on our side of the net,' said coach Nancy Somera. 'The time we wasted waiting for ASU to make mistakes took away opportunities for us to do things well on our side. We didn't fight, we didn't compete and therefore we didn't win.'

The Sun Devils (17-8, 9-6 Pacific-10) hit .331 on the night, while the Beavers (15-10, 5-8) were held to a .208 mark. ASU had more kills (74-69), more digs (62-60) and more blocks (13-7) than OSU.

Joining Schmidt with double-figure kills for the Beavers were Angie Shirley (14), Joscelyn Hannaford (13) and Lori Daedelow (11). ASU's Julia Leddy turned in a .516 hitting percentage with 17 kills, while teammate Amanda Burbridge also added 17 for the Sun Devils. Two other ASU players also finished with double-digit kills.

Hannaford also added 13 digs to turn in her sixth double-double of the season, and Nikki Neuburger played solid defense with 12 digs to round out the list of Beavers with double-figure digs.

Brandi Bonnarens added 56 assists to move up to fourth place on OSU's single-season chart. She now has 1283 assists for the year, 49 away from moving into third place.

Laura Collins came off the bench to add five assists, and several other Beaver reserves also saw playing time. K.C. Frederic and Katrina Nelson added two kills apiece.

'Every player who was eligible to play played. The subs I made tonight were more to replace someone who was playing tentative with someone who I thought would come in and compete, which is all we ever ask of anyone in this program,' Somera said.

Nelson, who came in off the bench in game two, went down with what is thought to be a serious knee injury, although details won't be available until medical officials are able to do a complete examination.
