TUCSON, Ariz. - The Oregon State volleyball team fell to No. 4 Arizona in four games Saturday evening, with the Wildcats coming away with a 15-5, 10-15, 15-8, 15-4 victory at the McKale Center.
'It was definitely a better competitive effort (than last night),' said coach Nancy Somera, whose team lost to Arizona State the night before. 'We went in with some objectives of getting back to doing the things that define what we consider a competitive effort.'
Gina Schmidt posted a team-best 13 kills for OSU, while the Beavers also got double-digit kills from Joscelyn Hannaford (12) and Lori Daedelow (10). Schmidt also picked up eight digs, tying Jessica Papell for the team lead.
'Our defense came back. We were aggressive in pursuing balls, and the block did a good job working hard,' Somera said. 'I'm pleased with the effort.'
Arizona had three players with double-figure kills, led by Allison Napier with 18. Lisa Rutledge hit .571 with 13 kills, while Marisa DaLee also added 13 kills with a .500 hitting percentage.
The Wildcats hit .348 for the night, compared with OSU's .138 mark. Arizona topped the Beavers in nearly every statistical category. The Wildcats had more kills (63-55), more digs (55-46) and more blocks (11-7) than OSU, although the Beavers did serve five aces to Arizona's three.
The Beavers, who have dropped their last five Pacific-10 matches, fell to 15-11 overall and 5-9 in the Pac-10 after the loss. The Wildcats improved to 21-2 and 14-1.
