Women's Basketball Cruises Past RTU Clondica 99-56
Nov. 4, 2000
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State University's women's basketball team cruised to a 99-56 victory against RTU Clondica in Saturday night's season opening exhibition game.
The Beavers trailed just once in the contest when Clondica took a 3-2 lead to open the game but OSU rallied for 16 straight points and never looked back. Pressure defense and hot shooting helped Oregon State run to a 59-22 half-time advantage.
'We have a lot of speed on the perimeter and our fast break really got going. I had a lot of confidence that we would be able to score easy transition buckets against this squad,' commented sixth-year OSU head coach Judy Spoelstra. 'Defensively in the first half we were aggressive and intense and played very, very hard.'
Four Beavers scored in double figures on the night with sophomore Nicole Funn's 21 points leading all scorers. Junior all-star Felicia Ragland added 18 points for the Beavers while freshman Brina Chaney scored 17 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds in her OSU debut. Freshman Hollye Holbrook reached double figures in scoring with 12 points.
'The big surprise was how well our post players played inside, especially our freshmen,' said Spoelstra. 'I thought Brina Chaney and Hollye Holbrook did a great job and Kristine Gleisberg came off the bench and did a great job at the three spot.'
As a team OSU hit 32-of-74 shots from the floor for 43.2 percent while Clondica managed just 13-of-53 shooting for 24.5 percent.
Both team were hot from the free throw line, Oregon State shooting 75 percent (30-40) and Clondica hitting 80 percent (25-31).
The Beavers forced 23 turnovers on the evening while giving the ball up just 11 times.
Oregon State returns to action with another exhibition contest on November 14, when the Beavers host a NWBL touring team. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
