With today's 38-32 victory by Oregon State, the Beavers have now won the last two games over Cal. Oregon State improves to 8-1 on the season (5-1 Pac-10), while Cal drops to 3-6 overall (2-4 Pac-10). The Bears still lead the all-time series, 31-22. Cal's loss today is its 10th-straight during the month of November, dating back to a 33-14 victory over Oregon State, Nov. 1, 1997. Today's attendance was 36,000.
Harris Sets NCAA Punting Yardage Record
Cal senior punter Nick Harris became the NCAA's all-time leader for total punting yards in a career with his 364 yards today on 8 punts - a 45.5 yard average. He now has 13,161 yards for his career, breaking the previous record held by Cameron Young of TCU (12,947). He entered the game needing 150 yards and broke the all-time record with a 46-yard punt with 2:34 left in the first quarter. Harris also saw two of his punts downed inside the 20, including one on the 7-yard line, giving him 33 punts inside the 20 this season.
Carter Ties Upshaw for Cal Career Sack Record
With 3:33 left in the game, Andre Carter tallied his 28th career sack (9-yard loss), tying Regan Upshaw (1993-95) for the school record. Cal free safety Nnamdi Asomugha also had one sack today (loss of 6 yards), giving him two this season...LB Scott Fujita also recorded a sack for a loss of 7 yards, his fourth sack of the year. Cal's 'Hit Squad' defense has now recorded 36 sacks this season to lead the conference.
Bears Score 10 points off Turnovers
Cal forced two turnovers today - one fumble recovery and one interception - leading to 10 Bear points. With 7:30 left in the first half, Matt Nixon recovered OSU's muffed punt catch attempt on the Beavers 17-yard line, leading to Jensen's 39-yard field goal. With 10:29 remaining in the game, LB Chris Ball halted an OSU drive deep in Cal territory by intercepting OSU's Jonathan Smith pass on the Cal 19-yard line. On the next play, Cal QB Kyle Boller hit WR Derek Swafford with an inside screen, which ended in an 81-yard TD completion, the longest TD pass by Boller this season, ranking 7th all-time at Cal for longest pass plays.
Cal's Offense Continues to Rack Up Points As of Late
After averaging only 13.8 ppg after the first five games of the season, Cal has averaged 32.5 ppg over the last four games, including a season-best 46 points in a victory over then No. 13 UCLA.
Boller Throws For Career-High 349 Yards
Cal sophomore QB Kyle Boller may not have thrown for a high percentage today (17-for-44), but he threw for a career-best 349 yards. He completed passes to eight different receivers today. His previous career-best yardage was 252 yards (16-for-34) this season in Cal's 46-38 triple OT victory vs. UCLA.
Swafford, Lyman, Currin, Heydorff Post Career Games Against Oregon State
Sophomore WR Derek Swafford (JC transfer), freshman WR Chase Lyman and junior Sean Currin put together their best overall collegiate games today. After catching a total of 11 passes for 149 yards in Cal's first eight games, Swafford snatched three catches for 112 yards today, including his third TD this season. Lyman caught 3 passes today for a career-best 98 yards, including his second TD of the season with 10 seconds left in the first half. Meanwhile, Currin caught a career-best three passes for a career-best 55-yards in a game. This included a 35-yard reception in the first minute of the second quarter, which was the second-longest catch of his Cal career. A transfer from Glendale CC, WR Chad Heydorff grabbed his first TD (10-yard catch) in a Cal uniform with 5:40 left in the first quarter, cutting the OSU lead to 14-7. He caught a career best 2 passes for a career-best 45 yards.
Cal Field Goal Kicking Continues to Improve
After converting only 5-of-15 field goal attempts in 1999, Cal sophomore Mark-Christian Jensen was 3-for-3 today, pushing his and the Bears conversion rate to a respectable 9-of-13 this season, including 8 of his last 9. Jensen nailed a 23-yard kick with 10:58 left in the second quarter and with 6:21 remaining in the third quarter, Jensen converted his second field goal of the day for a then-career best 39 yards. He twice previously nailed a career-best of 37 yards. With 1:44 left in the 4th, he hit a new career-best of 40 yards.

The safety Cal earned with 45-seconds left in the first quarter was the first by the Bears since Oct. 24, 1998, vs. UCLA...CB/PR Jemeel Powell continues to develop as an all-around player - he had a 38-yard punt return in the first quarter and in the same quarter had a pass break-up on OSU SE Chad Johnson, which sent his helmet flying...for the game, Powell had 2 punt returns for a total of 60 yards...Cal TB Joe Igber had 82 yards rushing on 17 carries today to give him 1,465 for his career, moving him into 15th place on Cal career rushing list (behind fellow teammate Marcus Fields with 1525 yards)...after allowing 31 points in the first half, Cal's defense gave up only 7 points in the second half...OSU finished with 524 total yards of offense, making the Beavers the first team to post 500 or more yards vs. the Bears since Arizona State had 566, Oct. 7, 2000.
