WALNUT CREEK, Calif.--Tailback Willie Hurst and linebacker Darrell Daniels, both of Washington, and kicker Josh Frankel of Oregon have been named Pac-10 Players of the Week in football.
Hurst and Daniels played key roles in Washington's come-from-behind 35-32 win against Arizona. Hurst, a junior from Compton, Calif., came off the bench to provide some fourth-quarter fireworks in the Husky win. He rushed just eight times for 116 yards (14.5-yard average) and two fourth-quarter touchdowns. One of the scoring runs covered 65 yards and the other was a highlight-reel 23-yarder. Husrt also ran for a two-point conversion. The Washington offense rushed for 211 yards and four touchdowns against an Arizona defensive unit that led the Pac-10 and ranked sixth nationally in rushing defense and had allowed just four rushing touchdowns all season prior to Washington.
Daniels, a senior from San Fernando, Calif., led the Washington defensive unit with a game-high 14 tackles, including one tackle for loss, and he recovered an Arizona fumble.
Frankel, a senior from Pacific Palisades, Calif., hit the game-winning field goal from 47 yards in overtime in Oregon's 27-24 win at Washington State. He was 2-3 on field goals for the game, connecting on the two longest kicks of his career from 47 and 46 yards, with the 47-yarder being the game winner.
Also nominated for offensive player of the week honors were running backs Sultan McCullough of USC, Leo Mills of Arizona, Patrick McCall of Oregon State and Dave Minnich of Washington State and receivers Freddie Mitchell of UCLA, Marshaun Tucker of Oregon and Derek Swafford of California. Others nominated on defense were linebackers Adam Archuleta of Arizona State, Michael Callier of Oregon and Lance Briggs of Arizona, end LaDairis Jackson of Oregon State and safety Billy Newman of Washington State. Nate Fikse of UCLA, John Anderson of Washington, Matt Dalton of USC, Nick Harris of California, Bobby Wade of Arizona and Alan Cox of Washington State were nominated for special teams play.
