Gina Schmidt Receives US Bank Woman Of Distinction Award

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Gina Schmidt has been honored as the recipient of the US Bank OSU Woman of Distinction Award for the month of November, it was announced by Dennis Bash, Vice President of Sponsorship and Event Marketing for US Bank, and Marianne Vydra, Senior Woman Administrator at OSU.
Schmidt, a junior from Beaverlodge, Alberta, is an outside hitter on the OSU volleyball team. She is the second recipient of this award, which recognizes outstanding female student-athletes at OSU based on academic achievement and community involvement.
She carries a 4.0 grade point average as a business major and has been named to the Pacific-10 All-Academic Team as well as the GTE District VIII All-Academic Team. Last year, Schmidt was also honored with the Drucilla Shephard Smith Scholastic Award from the university.
Schmidt currently ranks fourth in the Pac-10 for kills and is fifth in the league for digs. She has 449 kills so far this year and is on pace to become just the third Beaver with 500 kills in a year. She also has 326 digs, making her the first OSU player since 1996 to have more than 300 digs in a season. Schmidt has had 20 or more kills in 11 matches this year, including a career-high 32 against Washington to set a school record for kills in a four-game match.
Schmidt has also been involved at volleyball on an international level. She has spent several years with the Canadian National Team program, most recently having trained with the Canadian A-2 this past summer. She was the team captain of the Canadian Junior National Team for two years and competed at the Junior World Championships in 1999.
She has also been active in coaching several youth teams and working at various volleyball clinics in the area.
