This is Stanford's second consecutive Pac-10 Freshman of the Year, following Wallis' selection in 1999.
Ward, a forward from Alamo, Calif., leads Stanford and ranks second in the Pac-10 in scoring (12 goals, 14 assists - 38 points) as a rookie. She helped lead the Cardinal to a 13-5-1 overall record (6-3-0 Pac-10) and its third straight NCAA Tournament apperance. With 14 assists on the season, Ward led the Pac-10 and broke the school single-season record held by U.S. National Team member Julie Foudy (13). Ward started all 19 regular season games this year and is already tied for eighth on the Stanford all-time assist list. She ranks sixth on the school single-season point list (38), while her 0.74 assists average also is seventh in the nation.
Carlson (Citrus Heights, CA), a sophomore midfielder, has three goals and is second on the team with eight assists. Sauer (Spring, TX), a junior, played an integral role in a solid Cardinal defense while adding one game-winning goal and an assist. As the starting goalkeeper, Smolak (Lake Oswego, OR) logged 1639:14 minutes, making a career high 95 saves en route to 10 shutouts (4 shared) in her senior campaign. Itri (Huntington Beach, CA), a senior co-captain, has started 59 of a possible 60 matches over the last three years. Wallis (Los Gatos, CA), a sophomore forward, is tied for the team lead with 12 goals and has also tallied three assists.
