TEMPE, Ariz. -- After pulling in the top recruiting class of 2000, the Arizona State University baseball team is off to another strong start in the recruiting wars of 2001. On the early signing day for college baseball, the Sun Devils pulled in two of the nation's top five pitchers and eight top Arizona high school prep stars.
Head Coach Pat Murphy inked his seventh recruiting class, which includes two of the top pitchers on Baseball America's top 200 high school players list. RHP Michael Jones (Phoenix/Thunderbird HS) is listed as the top high school prospect in the nation and has dominated in select baseball showcases around the nation, including the Area Code Games. RHP Kris Honel (Bourbonais, Ill./Providence HS) is ASU's other top signee. The hard-throwing Honel is listed as the No. 5 high school talent in the nation by Baseball America. ASU signed 15 players total in the early period, including eight total from Arizona. The signings were not just limited to the Southwest, as ASU pulled in top players from Texas, Nevada, California and Kansas.
'At ASU we have a rich tradition and are always striving to find a special type of student-athlete to represent our school and program in the best manner possible,' said Murphy. 'I truly believe my staff and recruiting coordinator Jay Sferra have pulled in another great crop of kids so far.'
The 2000 recruiting class that will debut on the diamond this spring was recently ranked No. 1 in the nation by Baseball America and third by Collegiate Baseball. Eight drafted players highlight the 2000 recruiting class, including OF Chris Duffy (South Mountain CC), Eric Keefner (Chicago, Ill.) and Skyler Fulton (Olympia, Wash.)
The 2000 Pac-10 Champion Sun Devils are armed and loaded and ready for a return trip to Omaha for the 2001 season. ASU returns seven starting players and two pitchers, including the entire infield and preseason All-Americans Casey Myers (C) and Eric Doble (RHP). The Devils open the '01 season on Jan. 25 vs. the University of Texas-Arlington.
