Nov. 9, 2000
STANFORD, Calif. - Freshman Nicole Powell (Phoenix, AZ/Mountain Pointe HS) had a triple-double of 13 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in her collegiate debut as 14th-ranked Stanford University posted a 104-55 exhibition victory over RTU Clondica Riga of Latvia on Thursday night at Maples Pavilion.
Powell, who accomplished the triple-double in just 29 minutes, was one of six Stanford players to score in double figures. Powell, who was a Parade Magazine First Team Prep All-American last season, had seven points, seven rebounds and five assists in the opening 20 minutes to give the Cardinal a 51-29 lead going into the locker room.
RTU Clondica Riga jumped out to a 13-8 advantage in the opening 3:30 of the contest, but the Cardinal scored the next eight points to take the lead for good. Stanford extended the lead to as many as 24 points (49-25, 51-27) before the half, and went on a 15-4 run in the final moments to finish the game with its largest lead of 49 points.
Junior center Cori Enghusen (Bothell, WA/Inglemoor HS) scored 10 of her game-high 18 points in the opening seven minutes, and senior Carolyn Moos (Wayzata, MN/Blake School) also finished with 18 thanks to 10-of-10 shooting from the foul line.
Juniors Lauren St. Clair (Philadelphia, PA/Mt. St. Joseph's Academy) and Enjoli Izidor (Seattle, WA/Roosevelt HS) tossed in 11 points apiece for the winners, while senior Sarah Dimson (Norman, OK/Norman HS) contributed 10 points. Stanford also out-rebounded the Latvian visitors 53-23, and shot an impressive 55.7 (39-of-70) percent from the floor. The Cardinal posted the impressive despite having only 10 players in uniform, as freshmen Susan King (Richfield, MN/Academy of Holy Angels) and Chelsea Trotter (San Dimas, CA/Brea-Olinda HS) missed the game with the flu.
Anete Brice led RTU Clondica Riga with 16 points, including four 3-pointers.
Stanford opens its regular season on Friday, November 17th at Bay Area rival Saint Mary's at 7:30 p.m. at McKeon Pavilion. The Cardinal opens its home campaign on Monday, November 20th against Santa Clara at 7:30 p.m. at Maples Pavilion.
