Gieczys and Mattson Advance to Round of 32 at ITA Women's Tennis Regional

STANFORD, Calif. - The University of Oregon women's tennis team opened action at the ITA Regional Thursday as two Ducks singles players and another double pair registered a perfect opening day.

In singles action, a pair of Ducks advanced to Friday's round of 32 as sophomore Jeanette Mattson picked up a pair of wins over Portland's Samantha Kluger, 6-2, 6-1, and Washington's Amy Allen, 6-0, 6-0. Sophomore and 14th-seeded Monica Gieczys also advanced after a first-round bye and second-round win over Pacific's Melinda Kocsis, 6-4, 6-3.

Four other Duck singles players suffered opening-round losses and will play in the consolation bracket Friday. California's Sekita Grant beat junior Adeline Arnaud, 1-6, 6-3, 7-5, Washington's Claire Carter edged junior Janice Nyland, 7-6, 6-1, Fresno State's Courtney Jantz defeated freshman Courtney Nagle, 6-4, 6-3, and Washington State's Moniek Vandaven beat junior Vickie Gunnarsson, 6-3, 6-3.

Two of those Duck semifinal advancers played later Thursday evening and won as freshman Courtney Nagle beat Santa Clara's Ashley Campbell, 8-1, and junior Vickie Gunnarsson over St. Mary's Heather Snow, 8-1. UO's Nyland and Nyland earned byes in the first round of the consolation bracket.

In doubles, Giezycs and Nagle posted a pair of wins Thursday, over the Sacramento State pair of Gabriella Lundquist and Janice Mota, 6-1 (ret. injury), and Washington State's Ana-Maria Moura and Stacy McKenna, 9-8.

Among Duck losers in the opening round of doubles that will advance to Friday's consolation action included Gunnarson and Nyland, 8-4, to Zororana Roganovic and Monique Vandaven of Washington State, and Arnaud and Mattson, edged by Pooja Deshmukha nd Barbara Kudlikova of Idaho, 8-6.

'It wasn't a great day, but OK,' Oregon women's coach Jack Griffin said. 'It's a difficult tournament, but it's early in the season for us since we only started at the end of September. Hopefully we can get a little better tomorrow.'
