Nov. 9, 2000
The University of Oregon softball team signed three players to letters of intent for the 2002 season, head coach Rick Gamez announced today.
Ashley Richards (C/IF, Richland, Wash.), Lindsey Kontra (P, Valencia, Calif.) and Mari Lyn Petrick (C/UTIL, Hillsboro, Ore.) are all expected to see playing time in their first season with the Ducks, Gamez said.
'We are very excited about this class,' Gamez said. 'We are expecting all three to come in and make contributions as freshmen and I'm confident that they will make a mark on the program.'
Kontra, a senior at Hart High School, played at the gold level in the ASA and plays for the Panthers Gold team out of Southern California. Kontra's 14-under team won the national championship and her 16-under team finished second. Kontra was a CIF Southern Section Honorable mention selection and was selected to the Fountain Valley All-Tournament team in 2000.
'Lindsey is going to be an impact player,' Gamez said. 'She's coming in as a left-handed pitcher and that's going to make a difference.'
Richards, a senior at Richland High School, helped lead her team to the state 4A league championships in 1999 and was a 1st team All-Conference selection the same year. Richards was also the 1999-00 4A Conference Player of the Year.
'Ashley is going to be very versatile,' Gamez said. 'We're going to be able to utilize her athletic ability a many positions.'
Petrick is a senior at Glencoe High School and was a 1st team All-Conference and All-State catcher last season. Petrick led the Metro League in 2000 with a .438 batting average. Petrick's brother, Ben, is a catcher for the Colorado Rockies.
'Mari Lyn is another kid that is very versatile,' Gamez said. 'She will be utilized in more than one position.'
