Washington Volleyball Inks Two To National Letters of Intent

Nov. 9, 2000

(SEATTLE) - - Washington head volleyball coach Bill Neville has announced the signings today of two high school seniors to national letters of intent. Quick hitter Vanessa Gilliam (Fairfield, Calif.) and swing hitter Kaitlin Leck (Carson City, Nev.) will make up UW's class of 2005.

'This is a very good recruiting class for us,' Neville said. 'Both Vanessa and Kaitlin are strong players, who can step in right away and are ready to withstand the rigors of division I volleyball.'

Gilliam, a senior at Vacaville High School, has led the Bulldogs to a 14-0 league record in 2000 and a spot in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II quarterfinals. The 6-2 quick hitter also was a member of the 1998 USA Volleyball Youth National Team and spent her first two years of high school at Justin-Siena High School in Napa, Calif.

'Vanessa is a big, strong player who will immediately come in and establish a presence next year for us in the middle,' Neville said. ' She's an aggressive, powerful player who hits the ball extremely well.'

Leck, a 6-1 left-handed swing hitter, is a four-year starter at Carson High School and was a first-team all-league selection a year ago for the Senators. Leck played club volleyball for the Sierra Nevada Volleyball Club under coach Ray Batalon.

'Kaitlin is a good ball-handler, who is a very stable and steady player,' Neville said. 'She will come in right away and help strengthen our hitting corps.'

The Washington volleyball team currently is 6-16 overall with two weeks of play remaining in their 2000 campaign.
