Hawley Pulls Upset at ITA Regionals

Irvine, Calif. -Bruin junior Catherine Hawley, unseeded in the 64-player singles draw at the ITA Regional Championships, upset second-seeded Karin Palme of Arizona State, 7-6, 0-6, 7-6 in the second round on Friday. Earlier in the day, Hawley won her opening round match, defeating UNLV's Amy Hadziosmanovic, 6-0, 6-4.
Also winning Friday was top-seeded Sara Walker, who cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 decision over San Diego State's Katja Karrento in the first round. She had little trouble in the second round, beating Pepperdine's Dorothee Kurz, 6-2, 6-1.
Joining Hawley and Walker in the round of 16 on Saturday will be Bruin freshman Lauren Fisher, who defeated USC's Bernadette Bayani and LMU's Andrea Lord in the first and second rounds respectively.
Both Petya Marinova and Zana Zlebnik dropped matches Friday. Marinova won her first-round match but fell to ASU's Cindy Sureephong, 7-5, 6-3 in the second round. Zlebnik dropped her first-round match, 6-1, 7-5 to Arizona's Laresa Marino.
In doubles action, Walker and Zlebnik moved into the second round with an 8-4 decision over Arizona's Marino/Laroque. Marinova and Fisher, however, dropped their opening round match to Blau and Gough of Arizona, 8-5.
