Volleyball Falls To Washington In Five Games

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Five Washington players finished with 10 or more kills to lead the Huskies to a five-game win over the Oregon State volleyball team on Friday night. Scores were 15-11, 12-15, 15-5, 7-15 and 15-12.
'I don't want to believe that was our best effort tonight,' said coach Nancy Somera. 'It's not due to a lack of desire, but this team needs to find a way to turn desire into execution.'
Hannaford hit .372 for the night, while Schmidt hit .274 but the Beavers finished the night with a .195 mark as a team, with three players hitting at a negative percentage for the match.
Washington (7-17, 2-14) hit .270 as a team, highlighted by an impressive performance from Lisa Underhill. Underhill posted a team-best 19 kills with a .563 hitting percentage.
Schmidt also tallied 16 digs, giving her 17 double-double matches for the season. The Beavers also got a career-high 23 digs from Jessica Papell, who also served three aces to extend her streak to six consecutive matches with at least one ace.
The Huskies had two players post double-doubles. Gretchen Maurer had 14 kills and 13 digs, while Britni Churnside added 66 assists and 14 digs to go along with four service aces and five kills.
Brandi Bonnarens dished out 50 assists for the Beavers to stay on pace for the single-season assists record. She moved up to third place on the list with 1372 assists this season. She needs 67 more to move into second place. OSU also got a career-high 13 assists for Laura Collins, who made her first collegiate start against the Huskies.
Angie Shirley also moved up the charts in two career categories. Shirley had eight kills to move up to seventh all-time at OSU with 1043 kills. She also moved up to fourth all-time for total blocks after five blocks against UW pushed her totals to 462.
