Three Doubles Teams Reach Quarterfinals in ITA Regionals

No. 15 seed Raquel Kops Jones stands alone as she advances in singles to the quarterfinals of the ITA Regional Championships held at Stanford. Jones defeated No. 2 seed Kristina Kraszewski of Washington 6-4, 6-0. No. 16 seed Jieun Jacobs managed second-best to Jones with an appearance in the round of 16 before losing to No. 1 seed Laura Granville of Stanford 6-2, 6-1.
The remaining three bears who advanced to the third round of competition lost before the round of 16. Lisa Swierniak lost to No. 8 seed Liesl Fichtbauer of Fresno St. 6-3, 6-3, Kristen Case lost to No. 11 seed Ilona Kordonskaya of Washington 6-1, 6-1, while sophomore and No. 10 seed Christina Fusano was defeated by Nevada's Tjasa Jezernik 6-7(2), 6-2, 6-1.
Raquel Kops-Jones will face No. 7 Lauren Barnikow of Stanford Sunday as she tries to advance to the semifinals of the four-day regional tournament.
In doubles, Cal was well represented in the quarterfinals as three tandems played for a chance at the semifinals.
The team of Nicole Havlicek/Jieun Jacobs advanced to the semifinals by defeating Washington St.'s Zorana Roganovic/Moniek VandeVen 8-2 and will play Sunday against Lauren Barnikow/Lauren Kalvaria, the No. 2-seeded duo from Stanford.
Lisa Swierniak and partner Kristen Case reached the quarterfinals before losing to No. 4 seed Darija Klaic/Kristina Kraszewski of Washington 8-4. The remaining Cal tandem of No. 8-seeded Raquel Kops-Jones and Anita Kurimay failed to advance to the semifinals with a loss to Stanford's No. 2 seed Barnikow/Kalvaria 9-8(1).
