Nov. 11, 2000

TEMPE, Ariz. - Led by junior Melody Johnson's 17 points, Arizona State defeated Cassovia Bardejov of Kosice, Slovakia, 80-73 in women's basketball exhibition action at Wells Fargo Arena Saturday night.

Johnson made 7-of-10 from the field and added three from the free throw line to obtain her team-high total. Junior Leah Combs added 12 points for the Sun Devils.

Slovakia was led by a game-high 19-point effort by Zuzana Skuarekova, but three others contributed with double-digit scoring in the loss.

Although it had led by as much as 16 points earlier in the second half - and 10 points with 3:34 remaining - ASU saw its lead slipping away in the final minutes. After creating her third steal of the game, Slovakia's Stela Vaselova banked in a three-pointer with 2:37 left that cut the Sun Devil advantage to seven points. A minute later, Vaselova managed another three-point play before making the field goal that brought Slovakia to within three, 75-72 with 1:31 left.

But when they needed them most, the Sun Devils cashed in from the free throw line. In the final1:18 of the contest, ASU sunk five-of-eight from the charity stripe including four-of-six from sophomore Brett Leonard.

ASU also cashed in from the three-point line during the course of the game, knocking down six-of-10 from behind the arc. Seniors Aubrey McFadyen and Natalie Tucker led the way with two apiece. However, ASU not only shined on offense but played smothering defense throughout that netted 14 steals among Slovakia's 29 turnovers.

The Sun Devils will tip off the regular season opener next Saturday, Nov. 18, when they host Texas-San Antonio at Well Fargo Arena. Although originally scheduled for 7 p.m., the game has been moved to 2:00 p.m. MST.
