No. 1 Men's Soccer Defeats Oregon State 4-3 In Double OT
Nov. 12, 2000
STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford senior forward Corey Woolfolk scored his second goal of the game at the 109:26 mark to give the top-ranked Cardinal a 4-3, double-overtime victory over Oregon State in a Pac-10 game at New Maloney Field. The extra periods were necessary after Stanford rallied from deficits of 2-0 and 3-2.
The match marked the final regular season contest for both teams, as the Cardinal improves to 16-2-1 (6-2-0) while the Beavers fall to 7-11-1 (1-6-1).
After a first overtime session which saw Stanford take six shots on goal only to be denied on several saves by Oregon State goalkeeper Peter Billmeyer, Woolfolk gave the Cardinal the victory 4:26 into the second period. Derek Shanahan beat a defender down the left sideline and sent a pass to the middle of the box, where Woolfolk collected the ball and drilled the game-winner.
Oregon State jumped out to a 2-0 lead after just 13 minutes, as Josh Elbaum scored the first of his two goals at 4:07 and Justin Kirk found the back of the net at 12:57. Woolfolk began Stanford's comeback with his first goal of the match, heading in a cross from Todd Dunivant at 15:14.
Stanford netted the equalizer at 51:48 on Ryan Nelsen's follow-up shot at 51:48, however, the Beavers quickly responded and retook the lead at 3-2 on Elbaum's breakaway goal in the 56th minute. The Cardinal then forced the overtime sessions by tying the score again, this time at the 62:31 mark. Roger Levesque headed a pass to Scott Leber, who slotted a ball to the near post for his team-leading 13th goal of the season.
Cardinal keeper Adam Zapala made just one save, but his diving save of a Stephen Hensor shot in overtime kept Stanford alive.
Stanford now awaits word on its postseason future, to be announced on the 2000 Men's College Cup selection show, which airs Monday, Nov. 13 at 12:30 p.m. PST. The 32-team, single-elimination tournament is composed of three rounds at home sites, with the final four teams advancing to the Men's College Cup at Ericcsson Stadium in Charlotte, N.C. on Dec. 8 and 10.
