Post-Game Quotes Following Sunday's NCAA Tournament Women's Soccer Game
NCAA WOMEN'S SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIPS
Husky Soccer Field, Seattle, Wash.
Nov. 12, 2000
WASHINGTON HEAD COACH LESLE GALLIMORE
GENERAL REMARKS: 'We couldn't be more pleased to come away with not only a victory, but a significant victory. We have been itching for this day since we clinched the conference title two weeks ago. It has been hard to temper our sentiment for two weeks, but I think our team did a tremendous job setting the tone against a very good Montana team that has been on a roll. We really took care of business. I'm happy for us and happy for the fans that have come out to watch us all year, been tremendous and today was no exception.'
'Everything went right. When we took a 3-0 lead, as a coach, you always have a negative mindset or looking at what we can do better. You wonder if this is going to be good for the next round, the next opponent, good enough for the final four, good enough if we are in the national championship. I think our team has that attitude as well, we are all trying to play our best. From the players that started to the players off the bench, we played about as perfect of a game as I think we could have played today.'
(On getting an early goal): 'It was a huge deal. It is always something that is on our mind, going out and setting the tempo of the game, trying to score early, give ourselves early confidence and put the other team back on their heals a little bit. The difference between today and earlier games was that we kept after the things that worked and got a second and a third goal. We wanted to come out and dominate today.'
(On Washington's game plan): 'We just wanted to build on our strengths all year, which is to play solid team defense behind the ball and to get out and run at the other team and to get our attacking midfielders behind and our forwards holding the ball in front of the goal. On re-starts we were outstanding today, corner kicks, free kicks are a huge part of the game of soccer and I think we are finally getting to the point where we can say we are a good re-start team.'
(On her Washington players): 'They all pleased me. I think that (Tami Bennett, Vanessa Pierce and Theresa Wagner) have done it all year. My expectations for them are so high that they have a hard time living up to them, but it's because they do it everyday. In particular, I think the play off our bench was the difference today. Erin Otagaki came in and had an absolutely outstanding game, the best she has played since the beginning of the season. Gina Brewer had a good game today. Dee Behler came in and was steady. I guess if you were going to make me pick one (player), it would be Vanessa (Pierce) because she is a defender and they get the least amount of glory and she has been someone who, as a second team All Pac-10 pick, I would have put her on first team if I was voting. She was tremendous today, she's been tremendous all year and I thought from the back of the field to the front of the field, she was absolutely stellar. Katie Goodeve was tremendous today, Suzanne (Culpepper), Andrea (Morelli) and Hope (Solo) all just made it difficult for the other team.'
(On playing Portland in the third round): 'We expect a great game. It's going to be kind of a chess game to see who flinches and who does what. But, we know what they are all about and we are confident in our ability if we go out and play the way we are capable of playing. We are going to give them all they can handle. I think we have the ability to attack and score on them. If we can play solid defense, the way we have been playing, it should be a very good game. Our ongoing mantra of 'why not us' has been our theme and it will be against Portland. We'll prepare for our opponent, but we'll pay more attention to what we need to do.'
WASHINGTON DEFENDER VANESSA PIERCE
(On her goal off a free kick): 'I practice that shot quite a bit. I vary it depending on where the wall is, where the keeper is, it all depends.'
(On corner kicks): 'I just love trying to score on corner kicks. It's just a big thing for me. I love headers and clearing them from the back is fun, but not as fun as scoring off a corner kick.'
(On Washington's game plan): 'We had a plan to contain their speed and contain the center mids because they worked really well from the center mids to the forwards and playing through balls and counter-attacking well. We decided that we needed to contain their ability to get forward on the counter attack.'
WASHINGTON FORWARD TAMI BENNETT
(On a 5-0 win in their first game of the tournament): 'It's kind of nice, all of our Pac-10 games were just one goal games. It's nice to get in and score goals, especially people who came off the bench who came in and scored. It gives us a lot of confidence going into our next game.'
(On heading into the third round against Portland): 'It's the end and you just have to think that every game could be your last. If you don't play your hardest, do everything you can and try to win the game, you'll look back and regret it forever.'
WASHINGTON MIDFIELDER THERESA WAGNER
(On marking Montana's Shannon Forslund): 'She's a great player, very fast, great skills, really aggressive. It was a good battle, I just played my game.'
(On heading into the third round against Portland): 'There's definitely a sense of urgency, but it's just another soccer game. We'll go out there, have fun, give it our all and hopefully walk away with a win.'
MONTANA HEAD COACH BETSY DUERKSEN
(On Washington): 'I thought Washington played very well today. We wish them well and hope they do well. Four teams from the Northwest made the tournament and we hope they represent this area well. They have the number two seed in the tournament and the way they played today shows they have a chance to win.'
(On Montana's Game Plan): 'They have a very fast team and we knew that coming in. We went into the game looking at it defensively. Our plan was to try to play for the shutout. We knew we needed to defend well to have a chance. We thought that Washington, coming off a weeks rest, would come out really hard in the first 20 minutes. We wanted to put our best defenders out to hold them off and then bring in our scorers. We only had two days work on it. I guess it didn't work.'
(On recruiting Husky players Andrea Morelli and Melissa Bennett): 'They are great players and that is why we went after them. Seeing them today is the first time I've seen them since their official visits (to Montana). The Seattle area has a lot of talent.'
MONTANA MIDFIELDER JODI CAMPBELL
(On the Game): 'We played as hard as we could. We have nothing to hang our heads about. It's disappointing to lose but we will be able to look back at this season and be happy about it.'
MONTANA MIDFIELDER SHANNON FORSLUND
(On the Huskies scoring first): 'It didn't bring us down. We are a good team and being down a goal didn't shake our confidence. We tried hard, we were just a bit unlucky.'
