UW Rowers Win at Head of the Lake

Seattle, Wash. - The Washington men's and women's varsity eight-oared crews won the premier races at the annual Head of the Lake Regatta, sponsored by Lake Washington rowing Club, on the Montlake Cut Sunday morning. Husky junior varsity crews won their races as well.
The varsity women's crew, coxed by junior Mary Whipple, covered the course in a time of 16 minutes, 48.68 seconds to win the women's open eight. Their elapsed time for the head race was well ahead of the University of Victoria, which finished in 17:05.36. Pac-10 Conference rival crews from California, Oregon State and Washington State followed in that order. In all, 15 boats competed in the women's trophy race.
On the men's side, the Husky varsity crew, covered the course in 15:13.27 to win the open eight. Victoria was second, followed by Oregon State, Gonzaga and British Columbia in the nine-boat field.
Washington's junior varsity men won their race in 16:01.52 while the junior varsity women posted the fastest time in their race at 18:02.43. Washington had two boats in the men's third varsity race, and they finished first and second, as did a pair of crews in the men's open four. The Husky women finished first and third, with Victoria second, in the third varsity eight race.
The race marked the conclusion of the fall rowing season. Washington opens the 2001 season with its annual Class Day Regatta March 24.
