Stanford is no stranger to success at the NCAA Championships ... Stanford's men's team has finished no lower than sixth place since 1994 ... In 1996 and 1997, Stanford won the NCAA title, finished second in 1998, and placed fourth last year ... The Cardinal women have placed no lower than third since 1996 ... During that time, Stanford has won the NCAA title once (1996), finished second in 1997, and for the last two years has placed third.

Who will run for the Cardinal at the NCAA's? ... Difficult to say because both the men's and women's teams have so much talent and depth to choose from ... During the 2000 season, 25 men runners have competed, while 19 Stanford women have competed ... One thing is certain on the men's side, Jonathon Riley will be at the starting line for the Cardinal ... Riley has won the Pac-10 title and the NCAA West Region crown this year ... In four races this year, Riley has won three times ... Riley became Stanford's first Pac-10 champion since Marc Olesen captured the title in 1985 ... Riley, a senior co-captain, competed in the 5,000 meters at the 2000 United States Olympic Trials in Sacramento ... Riley will attempt to become a four-time All-American when he competes at this year's NCAA's ... Also look for a strong performance from fellow senior co-captain Thomas Murley, a senior competing in his final NCAA cross country championship ... Murley will be competing in his third straight NCAA's ... Last year, Murley gained All-America honors as Stanford's top runner (16th overall) ... Murley has competed in four races this year, and has finished no lower than seventh ... Murley and Riley finished 2-3 at the Pre-NCAA Meet at Iowa State in October ... The Cardinal women having been running strong all season ... Two prominent team members have included Lauren Fleshman and Elena Villarreal ... Fleshman, a sophomore, finished second at the recent NCAA West Regionals, and third at the Pac-10 Championships ... Villarreal has competed in six meets this year with four Top-4 finishes ... Villarreal recently placed fourth at the NCAA West Regionals, and sixth at the Pac-10 meet.
The Cardinal men recently won the NCAA West Region title for a fifth straight season ... The Stanford women earned a berth to the NCAA Championships with a first place title at the West Region, its fourth title in the last five years ... The Cardinal men have competed in seven races this year, winning six of those meets and third in the other ... The Stanford women have also won six of seven meets entered, with one second place finish.
This will be the second trip to Iowa State for the Cardinal this year ... On Oct. 14, the Cardinal placed second to Brigham Young at the Pre-NCAA's ... Stanford chalked up 104 points, compared to 83 for the Cougars ... Elena Villarreal led Stanford runners with a 13th place finish over 6,000 meters (21:37) ... The Cardinal men scored 255 points to finish third behind Colorado (64) and Northern Arizona (215) ... Thomas Murley and Jonathon Riley led a 2-3 finish for the Cardinal, while sophomore Louis Luchini finished eighth ... Murley ran the 10,000 meter course in 30:49, Riley at 30:50 and Luchini at 31:12.

The Stanford men's cross country team, ranked #2 in the nation, will battle for the NCAA title when it competes in the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa ... The Cardinal women, also ranked #2 in the nation, will also compete for top honors at ISU ... The Stanford men's team earned one of 18 automatic berths with its first place victory at last weekend's NCAA West Regional at Fresno State ... Thirty-one teams will battle for the NCAA title ... Stanford and Arizona will represent the Pac-10 Conference ... The Cardinal women also earned one of the 18 automatic berths with its victory at the NCAA West Region ... Like the men, 31 teams will compete for top honors ... Stanford, Arizona and Arizona State will represent the Pac-10 Conference.
