Nov. 14, 2000
TEMPE, Ariz. - Television and film star Rosie O'Donnell will serve as the national honorary spokesperson for the AstraZeneca Hoops for the Cure Classic, Arizona State head women's basketball coach Charli Turner Thorne announced Tuesday.
Arizona State will take on six-time national champion Tennessee at 7 p.m. Dec. 27, 2000 in the AstraZeneca Hoops for the Cure Classic at Bank One Ballpark in Phoenix. A portion of the proceeds from the game will be donated to the Phoenix affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Foundation and the Greater Phoenix Community Clinical Oncology Program to benefit breast cancer research, treatment and education in the Valley of the Sun.
O'Donnell, a five-time Daytime Emmy winner for 'The Rosie O'Donnell Show,' has long supported efforts to find a cure for breast cancer. O'Donnell's mother Roseann passed away from breast cancer in 1972.
Founder of The All For Kids Foundation, O'Donnell has appeared in a number of blockbuster movies including 'Sleepless in Seattle,' 'A League of Their Own' and 'Tarzan' in addition to starring as Rizzo on Broadway in 'Grease' in 1994.
'I am delighted to be a part of such an important and exciting event in the fight against breast cancer,' O'Donnell said. 'Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women, so almost everyone with a mother, sister, wife, daughter or friend will be affected by breast cancer at some point in their lives. The AstraZeneca Hoops for the Cure Classic will be a tremendous step in raising awareness and finding a cure for this deadly disease'
'There could not be a more perfect spokesperson for this event because of Rosie O'Donnell's documented commitment to finding a cure for breast cancer and her support for women's athletics and women's basketball,' Turner Thorne said. 'We are delighted to have a celebrity of her status supporting this event. Not only is she a talented, witty person, she is someone this country loves because of her support for important causes. Rosie O'Donnell has a strong commitment to helping people, and that is what this event is all about.'
