UW Golfer to Compete in Savane All-America Classic
Nov. 15, 2000
Seattle - Husky junior golfer Troy Kelly will compete in the 26th annual Savane College All-America Classic Nov. 20-21 in El Paso, Texas. The tournament features 18 of the nation's elite men's golfers, including U.S. amateur champion Jeff Quinney of Arizona State. The tournament will be held at the par-71, 6,781-yard El Paso Country Club.
Kelly, an honorable mention All-American and second-team All-Pac-10 selection, set a school record last season for single-season rounds with 44 on his way to a team-best 72.7 stroke average. His seven top-10 finishes were one short of current Husky coach O.D. Vincent's 1991 single-season record. Kelly's 12 career wins also leave him five short of the school record with two seasons to play. Kelly was chosen last year to compete for the American squad in the U.S. vs. Japan Collegiate Matches.
Some of the past champions of the Savane Golf Classic include Notah Begay (1994), David Duval (1991), Davis Love III (1984), Jerry Pate (1974) and Tiger Woods (1995). 1997 U.S. Amateur champion Matt Kuchar of Georgia Tech is the defending champion.
The first 36 holes of this year's tournament will be played on Monday, Nov. 20 beginning at 7:30 a.m. with the final round being played Tuesday, Nov. 21.
