Two Volleyball Players Earn Academic All-District Honors

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Oregon State volleyball players Gina Schmidt and Brandi Bonnarens were among the athletes recognized on the 2000 Verizon Academic All-District VIII team, which was announced Thursday.Schmidt was a first team honoree, while Bonnarens earned second team recognition.
Schmidt, a junior outside hitter, carries a 4.00 grade point average as a business major. She leads OSU with 494 kills, and her 4.53 kills per game average is fourth in the Pac-10. She also leads OSU with 356 digs and ranks fifth in the league with a 3.27 digs per game average. She has had 20 or more kills in 12 matches this year. Schmidt is now a two-time Academic All-District honoree, she was a second team recipient last year.
Bonnarens, a senior setter, has a 3.76 grade point average as a health care administration major. She is on pace to set an OSU record for assists in a season with 1,425 so far. She ranks third in the Pac-10 with a 13.19 assists per game average. Earlier this year she tied the school record for a single match with 82 assists against Washington State, and she holds six of the top 10 single-match assists totals at OSU. Bonnarens also ranks second all-time for career assists with 3,899. This is the first time she has been recognized on the Academic All-District squad.
Schmidt and the five other first team selections are now eligible for Verizon Academic All-America honors, which will be announced December 12. The other first team honorees from District VIII were Elisabeth Bachman of UCLA (3.65 in communications), Amanda Burbridge (3.43 in sociology) and Jami Coughlin (4.00 in education) of Arizona State, Allison Gustorf (3.87 in business administration) of Loyola Marymount and Keri Nishimoto (3.96 in computer science) of Long Beach State.
In order to be considered for the district team, an athlete must have played in 50 percent of her team's games, have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be in at least the second season of competition at her current school. District VIII is comprised of school in California, Hawaii, Alaska, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Nevada, Utah and British Columbia.
