Men's Basketball Opens 2000-2001 Against San Francisco State

The 2000-01 nationally-ranked Stanford basketball team will beunveiled on Sunday, November 19, at 5:00 p.m. when the Cardinalhosts the Gators of San Francisco State University at Maples Pavilion... With ten lettermen and three starters returning, anotherchampionship season awaits ... The Cardinal finished the 1999-00season 27-4 and earned a second straight Pac-10 title at 15-3 ...Nearly every pre-season national polls finds the Cardinal among thetop teams in the country ... That includes a #3 ranking by ESPN/USAToday, and a #4 national ranking by Associated Press ... This year'sroster is composed of 15 players, including a strong senior class ofJarron Collins, Michael McDonald and Ryan Mendez ... Two redshirtfreshman, Justis Davis and Tyler Besecker, will be added to the mixalong with true freshmen, Matt Lottich and Nick Robinson ... Thispromises to be another outstanding Stanford basketball team.

Stanford will begin its 86th year of collegiate basketball when it opens the 2000-01 season against San Francisco State ... Stanford is 69-16 in season openers, and has won 12 straight season openers ... The Cardinal is 58-6 in home season openers.
San Francisco State returns three starters from a team that chalked up a 4-23 record last year ... Charlie Thomas is in his 14th season at SFS with a record of 138-219.
After Sunday's game, the Cardinal will pack their bags and head for the Puerto Rico Shootout in San Juan ... The Cardinal will play three games in three days starting on Nov. 23 at 4:00 p.m. (Puerto Rico time) against Old Dominion ... The tournament field, including Stanford and Old Dominion, will have Memphis, Utah, Georgia, Indiana State, Miami (Ohio), and American-Puerto Rico ... This will be the first time a Stanford basketball team has competed in Puerto Rico.

Stanford won both its exhibition games, first a 91-70 victory over EA Sports as senior All-America candidate Jarron Collins scored 23 points (8-for-9 from the floor, 6-for-6 from the free throw line), grabbed ten rebounds and dished out three assists ... Sophomore center Curtis Borchardt scored 15 points and grabbed ten rebounds ... Borchardt then scored 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds to pace Stanford to a 107-74 victory over Global Sports.
