Volleyball's Paige Benjamin Named To Academic All-District Second Team

SEATTLE - University of Washington sophomore swing hitter Paige Benjamin (Redmond, Wash.) has been named to the 2000 Verizon Academic All-District VIII women's volleyball second team. The team is chosen by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) from Division I volleyball teams in California, Hawaii, Alaska, British Columbia, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Nevada and Utah.

Benjamin, who owns a 3.92 cumulative grade-point average in accounting, is second on the team in kills per game (3.11) and blocks per game (0.85), while playing in 87 of the Huskies' 90 games this season. Benjamin earned honorable mention Pac-10 all-freshman honors in 1999 with a team season-best .358 hitting percentage.

Benjamin was joined on the second team by eight other players including: Brandi Bonnarens (Oregon State), Jennifer Detmer (Stanford), Lauren Fendrick (UCLA), Melanie Hathaway (Cal Poly), Lily Kahumoku (Hawaii), Denae Mohlman (Utah State), Kristen O'Halloran (Cal Poly) and Roz Pelayo (Santa Clara).

Six players also were chosen for both the all-district first and third teams. The first team members will advance to the national ballot to be announced on Tuesday, December 12.
