Women's Basketball Earns 57-40 Season-Opening Win over Texas-San Antonio

TEMPE, Ariz - Freshman forward Betsy Boardman scored 15 points to lead the Arizona State women's basketball team to a 57-40 season-opening victory over Texas-San Antonio Saturday afternoon at Wells Fargo Arena.
The Sun Devils (1-0 on the season) jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead in the first five minutes of the game and held Texas-San Antonio (0-1) without a field goal until the 14:38 mark in the first half. The UTSA Roadrunners closed the gap to three points on two separate occasions in the first half, but the Sun Devils took a 28-21 lead into the locker room despite shooting just 35.7 percent (10-28).
Arizona State turned it up a notch in the second half, opening the session on a 21-6 run that gave the team a 51-29 lead. Sophomore guard Brett Leonard, senior guard Natalie Tucker and Boardman each hit three-pointers to put the Sun Devils up by 22 in that stretch. Arizona State shot 50 percent (12-24) in the second half and finished at 42.3 percent in the game, while Texas San Antonio shot just 27.7 percent (13-47) for the game.
Boardman led the Sun Devils with 15 points in her career debut, including a pair of three-pointers, while junior center Melody Johnson fell just short of a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds in her Sun Devil debut after transferring from the University of Colorado. Tucker paced the team with five assists, and junior Leah Combs turned in a strong effort on the glass with seven rebounds.
For Texas-San Antonio, junior forward Kate Fitzgerald had 11 points and seven rebounds, while senior forward Marlees McCrory had scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds.
Arizona State returns to action Sunday, Nov. 19 with a 1 p.m. match-up with South Florida at Wells Fargo Arena before heading to Honolulu for the Rainbow Wahine Classic Nov. 24-26.
