Guangul Places 151st at NCAA Cross Country Championship

AMES, Iowa - California freshman Girmay Guangul placed 151st at the NCAA Cross Country Championship Monday at Iowa State University's Cross Country Course. Guangul ran the 10,000-meter course in 32.13.1. Providence College' Keith Kelly won the individual race in 30:14.5, ahead of Farleigh Dickenson's Stephen Ondieki (30:16.3).

Originally from Ethiopia and now from San Jose, Guangul qualified for NCAAs by finishing ninth at the NCAA Pacific Regional in 31:11 Nov. 11. He led the Bears in all six races he competed in this season.

Arkansas won the men's NCAA team title with 83 points, ahead of Colorado (94 points), Providence College (121) and Stanford (149).

The Bears look to earn their first NCAA team berth next season behind Guangul and the return of Bolota Asmerom, a 2000 Olympian.
