Nov. 21, 2000
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Four Oregon State volleyball players were among the athletes named to the Pacific-10 All-Academic Volleyball Team, which was announced Tuesday by the league office.
Brandi Bonnarens and Gina Schmidt were named first team selections, while Katrina Nelson and Jessica Papell earned honorable mention recognition. Bonnarens and Schmidt are repeat honorees, while Nelson and Papell have earned All-Academic honors for the first time.
Bonnarens, a senior setter, carries a 3.76 grade point average in health care administration. She was a first team All-Academic pick last year as well after earning second team honors in 1998 and honorable mention status in 1997. Bonnarens also was named second team Academic All-District VIII this season. Bonnarens, who ranks fifth in the Pac-10 for assists, needs just eight more assists to break the OSU single-season record, and she's also 25 away from recording her 4,000th career assist.
Schmidt, a junior outside hitter, boasts a 4.00 grade point average as a business major. She was a second team Pac-10 All-Academic honoree last year, and last week she was named a first team Academic All-District VIII recipient. Schmidt ranks fourth in the Pac-10 for kills and is sixth in the league for digs. She leads the Beavers with 516 kills and 379 digs so far this season.
Nelson, a redshirt sophomore outside hitter, is majoring in business and has a 3.57 grade point average. She had 95 kills and 38 digs on the year, but has missed the last five matches after suffering a season-ending knee injury.
Papell, a junior defensive specialist, has a 3.05 grade point average and is majoring in sociology. Papell ranks second on the OSU squad with 274 digs, marking the first time in her career that she's had more than 200 digs in a season. She's had 10 or more digs in 13 matches this season.
