No. 20 Stanford Volleyball Handles No. 14 Santa Clara 3-1

Logan Tom paced the Cardinal with a match-high 23 kills as No. 20 Stanford defeated No. 14 Santa Clara, 3-1, to close out regular season play. Game scores were 9-15, 15-10, 15-10, 15-10.
The Cardinal improves to 18-11 overall while the Broncos fall to 26-4 overall.
The Broncos got out of the gate early in game one, posting a 6-0 lead before the Cardinal notched its first point on a Tara Conrad kill. Santa Clara increased the lead to 9-2 as the match progressed taking advantage of Stanford's poor passing and unforced errors. The Broncos reached game point at 14-2 but Stanford rattled off four points to force a Santa Clara timeout at 6-14. The Cardinal held off three game points before falling 9-15.
It was dï¿½jï¿½ vu in game two as Santa Clara went on a 6-0 run before Stanford regrouped to tie the game up at 6-6. The Cardinal took the lead on a block by Sara McGee and Lindsay Kagawa but the two teams would knot up again at eight-all. With a slim 11-10 lead, Stanford pushed forward to reach game point on a service ace by Kagawa. A kill by Sara Dukes would give the Cardinal the 15-10 win to even up the match at one game a piece.
Game three belonged to Stanford as the Cardinal took the early 5-0 lead. They extended the lead to 10-1 behind some timely hitting a solid blocking. Stanford stalled at 13-2, allowing Santa Clara to close the gap and get within three at 10-13. Consecutive kills by Logan Tom and Tara Conrad would give the Cardinal the 15-10 victory.
Stanford steadily built a 7-3 lead in the early stages of game four to force a Santa Clara timeout. The Cardinal extended the lead to 10-3 before the Broncos came charging back to pull within four at 6-10. Stanford rolled off several points to reach game and match point at 7-14. Once again Santa Clara rallied to get a couple of points to close the gap to 10-14. But ultimately the Cardinal would prevail, notching the win on a service ace by Sara McGee.
Invitations to the 2000 NCAA Volleyball Tournament will be extended on Sunday, November 26 when the 64-team field is announced. First and second rounds matches will run from Thursday, November 30 through Sunday, December 3.
