Quinney Finishes Tied For Ninth at Savane All-American

EL PASO, Texas (Nov. 21, 2000) -- Ricky Barnes, a sophomore at the University of Arizona, shot 5-under-par today for a 54-hole total of 196, shattering the tournament record of 201 to claim the Savane College All-America Golf Classic title at El Paso Country Club. Arizona State's Jeff Quinney, the 2000 U.S. Amateur Champion, tied for ninth with a 4-under 212.
The previous tournament record was set by Jay Don Blake (Utah State, 1980) and Jeremy Anderson (UNLV, 1998). Past winners of the Savane Golf Classic include Jerry Pate (1974), Davis Love, III (1984), David Duval (1991), Notah Begay (1994) and Tiger Woods (1995).
Monday Barnes set the tournament record on the opening 36-holes with a 12-under par total of 130. The previous 131-record was held by Jerry Pate (Alabama, 1974) and Gary Hallberg (Wake Forest, 1978). Barnes also broke Hallberg's best first round record by one stroke, shooting a 63. Also with his first round performance, Barnes tied the best individual round record with Guy Hill (Florida, 1992), Jeremy Anderson (UNLV, 1998) and Eric Ecker (South Carolina, 1999).
Michael Beard, a junior at Pepperdine, finished with a 54-hole total of 202, just one stroke over the previous tournament record and six strokes behind Barnes.
The par-71 course has a length of 6,781, a slope of 133 and a rating of 71.3.
