Quotes from Tuesday's 73-61 Loss to UTEP

POST-GAME QUOTES

UTEP VS. WASHINGTON
KeyArena, Seatle, Wash.
November 21, 2000

UTEP HEAD COACH JASON RABEDEAUX
On the outcome of the game: 'It was a great way for us to start our season. We've got a group of new kids, six newcomers and I thought that they showed a lot of resiliency and toughness.'

On the teams play: 'I was pleased to see that we were able to hold a lead on a Pac-10 road court. We're really pleased because Washington's got a good ballclub they play awfully hard.'

On withstanding Washington's comeback: 'We had a couple of big shots and some big offensive rebounds at our end that were big plays. Costello hit a huge three point shot after Washington had cut the lead to two and we were able to make our three point shots down the stretch.'

On Their Good Start: 'Our kids were itching to play, it was a big deal to them to come out on the road and play a Pac-10 opponent.'

On the teams play: 'I'm very pleased with my team, especially since it's a new group of guys and I think that they've played awfully well so far.'

WASHINGTON HEAD COACH BOB BENDER
General Remarks:
'Give credit to UTEP. They came out and forced the issue they wanted to. We dug ourselves a hole, battled back, and we had opportunities, but then if you are in that position every little thing is going to count down the stretch. Whether it was a turnover, a gamble on defense that led to a 3-point shot, a missed free throw at an inopportune time, these were problems for us. In an opening game like this you can look and address the mistakes. You show the kids on tape what happened.'

On the team's play: 'One thing we need to be better on is the play on the defensive end. Not allowing people to make run when we are struggling offensively. We missed some shots early and didn't get back on defense.'

On opening day loss: ' With a loss in the opener, there is a sense of urgency. We're at home, we're at home on Saturday and we have to take advantage of being at home again. You get to that fine line of playing not to lose. We have to go out and dictate and if we can go out at the start of the game remember that it will make all the difference in the world. Right now we are tentative.'

On the offense: 'We missed a lot of the shots I believe we will make but for the most part I felt we were getting pretty good shots. We didn't complete plays and that certainly led to a lot of frustration.'

On transition defense: 'We didn't get back, that's a mental mistake. We were running hard to get back, but we should have already been back. It was a technical breakdown. It wasn't a lack of effort, just a late reaction to what we should have been doing.'
