Cardinal Make Semis In Puerto Rico

The Stanford basketball team has reached the semi-finals of the Puerto Rico Shootout ... The Cardinal will face the challenge of the Memphis Tigers from Conference USA in a 3:00 p.m. contest (Puerto Rico time) on Friday, Nov. 24 ... The game will be televised on ESPN ... The Cardinal won its opening round game with a 84-60 victory over Old Dominion (11/23/00) as Honors Candidate Ryan Mendez scored 18 points, grabbed three rebounds and dished out three assists ... Four other Cardinal players scored in double figures, All-America candidate Casey Jacobsen with 16 points, Curtis Borchardt with 12, Julius Barnes with eleven and All-America candidate Jarron Collins with ten ... Jason Collins led both teams in rebounds with ten ... Stanford continued its hot hitting from three-point territory, hitting 9-of-18 shots from the floor ... This is Stanford's first trip to San Juan, Puerto Rico ... All games will be played at the Eugene Guerra Sports Complex, located on the American University of Puerto Rico campus.

Last year, the Cardinal set an NCAA record for field goal defense at .352 ... After two games, the defensive stat is .342 ... And the Cardinal has outrebounded its opponents, 81-58.
Jason Collins and Ryan Mendez have been voted co-captains by their teammates.
He missed the last eleven games of the 1999-00 season with a stress fracture in his right foot ... And then he was hampered by bone spurs in his foot that required surgery during the summer ... Thus he came back to Stanford not in the greatest shape and not expected to contribute right away ... But Curtis Borchardt has made a remarkable comeback even though he is not 100 percent ... Coming off the bench and averaging 17.5 minutes per game, Borchardt is Stanford's second leading scorer at 13.0 points and third in rebounding at 6.0 per game ... Borchardt is hitting 63 percent from the floor, and leads the team in free throw shooting at .882 (15-for-17) ... Borchardt already has seven blocks ... Last year, in 20 games he blocked 42 shots, and was well on his way to breaking the school record of 50 when he was sidelined for the last eleven games with a stress fracture in his right foot.
Shooting from three-point territory has remained a strength for the Cardinal thus far in 2000-01 ... Last year, the Cardinal led the Pac-10 in three-point shooting percentage at .400, and in three-point field goals made at 7.90 per game ... Stanford produced the second (David Moseley, .449), third (Casey Jacobsen, .435) and fifth-best (Ryan Mendez, .420) three-point shooters in the Pac-10 ... After two games, the Cardinal has hit 21-of-38 three-point attempts for .553 ... And while Moseley has graduated, Jacobsen and Mendez are back in mid-season form, hitting .583 and .500, respectively.
Stanford and Memphis have never met on the basketball court ... However, John Calipari, the first-year Memphis head coach, is no stranger to the Cardinal program ... Calpari is 2-1 against the Cardinal while the head coach at UMass ... Calipari holds wins over Stanford in the NCAA Tournament, a 75-53 victory in 1994-95 at the East Regional in Albany, New York, and a 79-74 decision in 1995-96 at the East Regional in Providence, Rhode Island ... Stanford defeated Calipari's UMass team, 73-71, in the semi-finals of the NIT in 1990-91.
