Oregon State Defeats Appalachian State By 23

HILO, Hawaii (AP) - Jason Heide had 14 points and seven rebounds Friday tolead Oregon State to a 60-37 victory over Appalachian State in the openinground of the Big Island Invitational Tournament.

Brian Jackson added 14 points and Jimmie Haywood 10 as the Beavers (3-0)shut down the Mountaineers.

Appalachian State (1-2) shot 13-of-46 (28 percent), even though itoutrebounded Oregon State (35-34). Shawn Alexander led the Mountaineers with 10points and six rebounds, the latter matching teammate Buddy Davis' total.

Mike Cokley and Josh Steinthal hit 3-pointers to close out the first half,giving the Beavers a 32-19 lead. Appalachian State, with Davis scoring fourpoints, got to within nine, could get no closer as Heide, Jackson and Haywoodtook over.

Over the final 20 minutes, the trio combined 27 points.
