Nov. 27, 2000
PULLMAN, Wash. - Five Washington State University football players were named to the Pacific-10 Conference all-academic first team Monday and seven others received honorable mention recognition, according to Tom Hansen, commissioner of the Pac-10 Conference.
Heading the list on offense were receiver Collin Henderson and lineman Brian Hollenberg. The Pac-10 defensive unit included linebacker Serign Marong, defensive back Cole Sheridan and tackle Jeremey Williams. All five of WSU's first-team picks sport grade point averages of better than 3.50. Henderson, a sophomore, is the leader at 3.90.
The Cougars who earned honorable mention honors included five on offense, quarterback Jason Gesser, running back Adam Hawkins, lineman Billy Knotts, place kicker Nick Lambert and receiver Paul Mencke. On the defensive side of the ball, linebacker Mike Isaacson and end Tupo Tuupo were selected.
Marong was also a first-team pick in 1999 and as a redshirt freshman in 1998 he was accorded honorable mention recognition. Gesser, Hawkins and Mencke were also named to the honorable mention unit a year ago.
To be eligible for the conference's academic team, a student must have a GPA of 3.00 or better. First-year freshmen and transfers are not eligible.
