WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- ARIZONA STATE junior center Melody Johnson has been named the Pac-10Women's Basketball Player of the Week for Nov. 20-27, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Johnson, from Colorado Springs, Colo., averaged 17.0 points and 7.3 rebounds in leading the Sun Devils to a 2-1 record and second-place finish at the Asahi Rainbow Wahine Classic in Honolulu. A transfer from Colorado, Johnson recorded her first double-double as a Sun Devil by scoring a career-best 23 points and grabbing 10 boards in a 67-6 win over host Hawaii. She followed that performance by posting 12 points, five rebounds and three blocked shots in the championship game, as ASU fell 54-51 to No. 22 North Carolina State. Johnson contributed 16 points and eight rebounds in a 67-45 opening-round win over Stephen F. Austin. She shot 70.0 percent (7-of-10) from the field against the Ladyjacks.
Johnson is averaging 14.4 points and 8.2 rebounds, while shooting 62.0 percent (31-of-50) from the field. She has started all five games for the 4-1 Sun Devils this season.
This is Johnson's first career Pac-10 Player of the Week honor and Arizona State's 18th Player of the Week honor all-time.
