The Stanford Cardinal basketball team, winners of the Puerto Rico Shootout, return home for a non-league game on Wednesday, November 28, against UC Riverside, and then hit the road again for a Saturday (Dec. 2) non-league contest at Long Beach State ... The Cardinal is off to another strong start, 4-0, including three wins (Old Dominion, Memphis, Georgia) at the Puerto Rico Shootout ... The Cardinal won its opening round game with an 84-60 victory over Old Dominion (11/23/00) as Honors Candidate Ryan Mendez scored 18 points, grabbed three rebounds and dished out three assists ... Four other Cardinal players scored in double figures, All-America candidate Casey Jacobsen with 16 points, Curtis Borchardt with 12, Julius Barnes with eleven and All-America candidate Jarron Collins with ten ... Jason Collins led both teams in rebounds with ten ... Stanford continued its hot shooting from three-point territory, hitting 9-of-18 shots from the floor ... In the semi-finals, Stanford scored a 83-60 victory over Memphis (11/24/00) as Jacobsen tallied a game-high 22 points, and Jason Collins added a career-high 19 points along with eight rebounds ... The Cardinal then beat Georgia (11/25/00), 71-58, in the championship game ... Jacobsen led the Cardinal with 22 points (7-for-10 from the floor) while Mendez added 17 points and three steals ... Jacobsen was named the tournament's MVP, while Mendez and Jason Collins were named to the all-tournament team.

Montgomery played collegiately at Long Beach State (a starter during his senior season), and graduated from LBS in 1968 ... McDonald graduated from Long Beach Poly in 1997 ... McDonald's father, Glenn, was an All-American guard at Long Beach State (1971-74) .. Glenn is now the intramural director at Long Beach State.
Stanford has enjoyed great success away from Maples Pavilion ... The Cardinal, since the 1997-98 season, has chalked up a 29-5 record on the road, and 21-5 on a neutral court ... Stanford has beaten its opponents on the road by a margin of 12.3 points per game.
Stanford's point differential remains strong in 2000-01 ... Stanford is beating its opponents by an average of 27.7 points per game.
Last year, the Cardinal set an NCAA record for field goal percentage defense at .352 ... After two games, the defensive stat is .357 ... And the Cardinal has outrebounded its opponents, 159-127.
Shooting from three-point territory has remained a strength for the Cardinal thus far in 2000-01 ... Last year, the Cardinal led the Pac-10 in three-point shooting percentage at .400, and in three-point field goals made at 7.90 per game ... Stanford produced the second (David Moseley, .449), third (Casey Jacobsen, .435) and fifth-best (Ryan Mendez, .420) three-point shooters in the Pac-10 ... And while Moseley has graduated, Jacobsen and Mendez are back in mid-season form, hitting .524 and .467, respectively.
Casey Jacobsen is Stanford's nominee for Pac-10 Player of the Week ... Jacobsen helped lead the Cardinal to three wins and the championship at the Puerto Rico Shootout last week ... Jacobsen scored 60 points (16-for-29 from the floor, 8-for-15 from three-point territory) and grabbed 13 rebounds in the three games ... Jacobsen was named the tournament MVP.
They were born eight minutes apart, and have been playing basketball since the age of six ... Jarron and Jason Collins are now in the starting lineup for the nationally-ranked Cardinal and making a major impact ... Combined they are totaling 21.8 points and 16.5 rebounds per game.
He missed the last eleven games of the 1999-00 season with a stress fracture in his right foot ... And then he was hampered by bone spurs in his foot that required surgery during the summer ... Thus he came back to Stanford not in the greatest shape and not expected to contribute right away ... But Curtis Borchardt (7-0, 230 pounds, Sophomore) has made a remarkable comeback even though he is not 100 percent ... Coming off the bench and averaging 19.0 minutes per game, Borchardt is averaging 7.5 points and 4.5 rebounds per game ... Borchardt already has eleven blocks ... Last year, in 20 games he blocked 42 shots, and was well on his way to breaking the school record of 50 before he was sidelined for the last eleven games with a stress fracture in his right foot ... In 24 career games at Stanford, Borchardt has 52 blocks, eighth-best in school history.
UC Riverside is 1-3 ... Their last game produced a victory, a 59-52 decision over Cal State Fullerton (11/25/00) ... Sophomore forward Mark Miller, who graduated from Logan High School in Union City, Ca, led the Highlanders with 17 points, five rebounds and two steals in 36 minutes of play ... One of their three losses was a 58-55 overtime decision to San Jose State ... Miller leads the team in scoring at 14.3 points ... Viliamu Horton leads the team in rebounding at 7.8 per game ... Jason Labagh, a senior starter, hails from San Francisco ... The Highlanders are in their second season of a transition to Division I status ...
