Melody Johnson Named Pac-10 Conference Player of the Week

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - ARIZONA STATE junior center Melody Johnson has been named the Pac-10 Women's Basketball Player of the Week for Nov. 20-27, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Johnson, from Colorado Springs, Colo., averaged 17.0 points and 7.3rebounds in leading the Sun Devils to a 2-1 record and second-placefinish at the Asahi Rainbow Wahine Classic in Honolulu. A transfer fromColorado, Johnson recorded her first double-double as a Sun Devil byscoring a career-best 23 points and grabbing 10 boards in a 67-6 win overhost Hawaii. She followed that performance by posting 12 points, fiverebounds and three blocked shots in the championship game, as ASU fell54-51 to No. 22 North Carolina State. Johnson contributed 16 points andeight rebounds in a 67-45 opening-round win over Stephen F. Austin. Sheshot 70.0 percent (7-of-10) from the field against the Ladyjacks.
Johnson is averaging 14.4 points and 8.2 rebounds, while shooting 62.0percent (31-of-50) from the field. She has started all five games forthe 4-1 Sun Devils this season.
This is Johnson's first career Pac-10 Player of the Week honor andArizona State's 18th Player of the Week honor all-time.
